SCHOOL FINANCE THE eBAY WAY
According to ATPE News, Education Week reports that cash-strapped school districts are turning to eBay, the Internet auction site, to raise funds. Everything from student desks and construction paper to unused school buildings have been put up for bid raising thousands of dollars. The eBay auction of a 1921 school building with a gymnasium, 13 classrooms and hardwood maple flooring brought $49,000 to Elm Valley School District in Aberdeen, SD. $90,000 was raised by Kentucky's Fayette County schools by selling 30 school buses and other vehicles on eBay. In North Carolina, $20,000 was raised selling school T-shirts after pop singer Avril Lavigne wore a district T-shirt in a music video.
Administrators are drawn by eBay's low listing costs, ease of use and reported 36.4 million users. According to eBay, auctions of school-related items have raised about $35 million.
