It's Friday
posted by: Cindy Omlin | February 17, 2011, 03:46 AM

2:50pm. Friday. The weekend begins...or not. As much as I wanted to begin my two-day relaxation, I knew that it was time for me to plan the week to come. Some colleagues thought I was crazy to delay the weekend, others joined me.

I learned something very specific about myself early in teaching: (1) I very much disliked taking work home with me and (2) I very much liked having my lesson plans completed before I went home on Friday. And I mean completed--standards and objectives identified, lessons written, activities planned, copies made, examples and itinerary posted. There was something completely relaxing knowing that on Monday morning I would walk into the classroom ready for the ensuing week.

My schedule lent itself to Friday planning--my weekend plans with friends rarely began before 8pm and Friday traffic in Los Angeles ended at about 6:30. So it just seemed logical to me to get it all done Friday afternoon.

I share my method not because I think my planning time practice is superior to anyone else's. I simply want to point out one idea and encourage others to share their best practices on this aspect of teaching. (How humorous/insane is it that one of the reasons I stayed late was because of traffic patterns?! Gotta love L.A.).

There are teachers reading this post who have suggestions about how to cut down on the planning stress that comes before any teaching. I and others would love to know your little tricks of the trade that you use to manage your planning time best? Please share.
