Union Legislation Developments
posted by: Cindy Omlin | April 11, 2011, 03:55 pm

Beginning in Wisconsin, legislation aimed at curbing union power, advancing education reform policy, and ending forced unionism has spread across the country. Currently states in every part of the country are in various stages of passing their own laws as the protests and debates rage on. The national unions and their state counterparts are on the defensive, organizing large ballot initiative campaigns and considering increasing their dues to pay for their efforts to preserve their monopolies. Make sure to follow the news in your state by reading AAE's daily blog posts.

Ohio Education Association Needs More Cash?

Last week as Ohio Governor John Kasich was signing Senate Bill 5 into law, the Ohio NEA affiliate, the Ohio Education Association, was already mobilizing their efforts to repeal the measure that would end forced unionism, makes strikes illegal and close major budget shortfalls via a ballot referendum. Unfortunately due to unprecedented budget shortfalls and the threat of layoffs, experts are warning that college students will be less likely to pursue a career in teaching for fear of uncertainty in the profession.

House Reauthorizes SOAR Act

Last week, the SOAR Act passed the U.S. House on a 225–195 vote, reauthorizing and expanding the successful D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program (DCOSP), an initiative aimed at providing scholarships to private schools to low income students in Washington, D.C. The SOAR Act not only restores the DCOSP it also expands the program, allowing more students to receive scholarships in our nation's capital. Would you add some stats about how kids using these scholarships are doing better academically and are more likely to attend college? I know there is good data on the program.
