The grant award was presented to Mr. Neves by NWPE representative Charlotte Shearer at a school staff meeting.  The grant will be used to purchase science and laboratory materials such as glassware and chemicals, batteries for electrical experiments, dissection specimens, shelves, lights, and potting soil for the school's small greenhouse.

Mr. Neves stated that the materials would enable him "to provide a proper lab for biology, physical science, and chemistry students which will equip them with skills to succeed in their college-level science classes."  The grant will also enable Mr. Neves to also assist elementary teachers with their science units by providing them with a few science supplies to retain in their classrooms.

Mr. Neves states that as a professional educator, is "desirous of being part of a professional association, not merely a trade union. NWPE fills that role for me. I am pleased to be a member."  Although he initially joined because of the liability protection provided by NWPE, he notes that he has "found many other benefits such as the newsletter, emails regarding state education issues, and grant opportunities such as this one."

NWPE awards classroom grants and teacher scholarships up to $500.  The deadline for spring 2012 applications is March 31.  Teachers can apply online at NWPE's website.
