Kathy Duplessis, White Pine Charter School Teacher, Ammon, ID Wins $500 NWPE Grant

The Core Knowledge Language Arts & Learning Classroom Kit focuses on the development of oral language skills within the context of specific knowledge domains. It will enhance a program that Ms. Duplessis developed at White Pine Charter School last school year in which twenty-two of the school's morning kindergarten students stay for an afternoon program entitled the Core Knowledge Academy where they are primarily taught Social Studies, Geography, and Science. They also receive instruction in Spanish, P.E. Art and Music.

The Core Knowledge Language Arts & Learning Classroom Kit's multimedia (disks, CDs,Image Card Library, and posters) will help Ms. Duplessis promote effective student learning by providing for different styles of learning and supplement the lessons she has alread developed for using the 12 domains of the Kindergarten Core Knowledge Sequence.

Ms. Duplessis stated that she joined NWPE for the connectivity with other educators that NWPE membership provides and for the teacher professionalism that NWPE portrays to the public as well as for NWPE's liability insurance.

NWPE awards classroom grants and teacher scholarships up to $500.  The deadline for spring 2012 applications is March 31.  Teachers can apply online at NWPE's website.
