posted by: Cindy Omlin | December 07, 2016, 05:00 PM

Congratulations to Kris Daratha, NWPE member and winner of a $500 NWPE grant to supplement Waterville High School's science program. With the help of a STEM grant last year, he and his students entered a national competition for design and implementation of solar heated sidewalks. They were able to create a prototype and three solar panels. The NWPE grant will help them improve the prototype and unleash five portable, heated sidewalks around Waterville, WA, in order to keep the community safe during harsh winters.  Mr. Daratha’s project is reusable, will continue year after year, and is a great way students will experience how STEM can better their community.

Idaho Education News reports that the Washington Post has once again cited the most challenging high schools in Idaho.  Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy, founded by NWPE President Dr. Bill Proser, makes the list once again.  It received highest honors in 2013 and 2014. Riverstone International, a private school and newcomer to the list, received top honors this year with the Academy coming in at second place. However, the Washington Post lists no score for the private school and the Academy had higher ACT scores. This gives Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy top honors for the most challenging public high school in the state of Idaho.

Congratulations to NWPE member Emily Lockhart, 7th-8th grade math teacher at Pocatello Community Charter School.  Ms. Lockhart, a two year member of NWPE, received a $500 grant to purchase math games and materials to increase the mathematical fluency of her students.  It is this type of support that Ms. Lockhart appreciates about NWPE.  “I chose to become an NWPE member because I like the resources available. It makes me feel safer in my job to know that I have legal support if need be. I also like having a voice in educational topics in the political sphere. I was happy to hear that NWPE was an option. The local union has not always been supportive of charter schools and I’m not sure that their decisions are always in my best interest. I’m proud to work at a charter school where families can choose to expose their children to different ways of learning and I think that this choice enhances the Pocatello Community.”
