Professional Development: It’s Not All Workshops and Conferences

Even though studies have shown that these forms of professional development are limited in their success, teachers still cling to them as ways to connect with other educators and get new ideas. It’s Not Too Early to Think About Professional Development…

Yes, you may still be settling into the classroom and struggling with teaching routines, but you still need to earn professional development credits. Webinars are a great way to earn those credits because they don't require travel and can be done from the ease of your home. Also, with so many groups hosting webinars, it's easy to find training for the particular area that you need. It's no surprise that the Better Business Bureau (BBB) recently issued a call for consumers to do their research before making holiday purchases. Said Kathy Graham, BBB President and CEO, "By checking prices at several retailers and reading advertisements carefully, consumers can make an educated decision on whether it's worthwhile to stand in line or miss a good night's sleep." Professional development for teachers is no exception. Conducting research on teacher training opportunities allows teachers to make educated decisions on whether it's worthwhile to miss a few days in the classroom or to dedicate four days of summer break to an institute or workshop.

Professional Development That Takes You to Another World, Almost

My decision to travel outside of the United States as a twenty-year old quickly became a time to observe what education looked like throughout the world. On every trip or study abroad experience I did my best to experience education in the country being visited. And upon my return from every trip I realized just how much the experience broadened my horizons (pardon the cliche) and helped me develop many content-rich lesson plans that intrigued my students.
