NEA & AFT Ties to Occupy Wall Street Protests
posted by: Cindy Omlin | October 27, 2011, 07:48 PM

Since the class warfare message of the Occupy Wall Street protests started nearly two months ago, the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers have taken every chance possible to align themselves in solidarity with the group of mostly underemployed college students and left-leaning activists. With AFT President Randi Weingarten joining in on protests and affiliates in Kentucky and Missouri taking part in protests of their own, the teacher unions are quick to point out that "public education, teachers and unions have increasingly come under attack from the One Percent."   Continue Reading...

Unions Take Education and Labor Battles to Courts
posted by: Cindy Omlin | September 29, 2011, 09:22 PM

2011 is shaping up to be the year of education and labor reform nearly nationwide. In March, 48 states were considering labor reform bills on the heels of major Republican gains in state legislatures across the country. What started as legislative progress and meaningful education reform in states like Indiana, Florida, and Idaho, has yielded an unprecedented backlash from unions who are literally fighting for their very survival in long drawn out court battles that are leaving many commonsense policies in limbo.

A major reason why I began working for the "professional educator association" movement was because, as a classroom teacher, I was frustrated by the fact that the public often perceives teachers as a narrow-minded group of professionals that all hold the same, union-influenced opinion when it comes to education policy. AAE knows better, and that is one reason this organization is so valuable. AAE proved that teachers are, in fact, a diverse group of professionals that have a wide variety of intelligent opinions about what the future of education should look like.   Continue Reading...
Wisconsin NEA Affiliate In the National Spotlight
posted by: Cindy Omlin | August 16, 2011, 08:40 PM
Since the labor battle erupted in Wisconsin in February, the state has been considered ground zero for the sweeping education and labor reform legislation debated nationwide. With new revelations from political spending watchdog groups and the state's NEA affiliate themselves, the Wisconsin Education Association Council is once again making national headlines for its fall from a onetime lobbying powerhouse to incurring massive layoffs.   Continue Reading...
Unions Already Boycotting 2012 DNC Convention
posted by: Cindy Omlin | August 15, 2011, 04:25 PM
The Democratic National Committee's decision to hold their 2012 convention in Charlotte, North Carolina has stirred up criticism from dozens of trade unions over North Carolina's "anti-union" climate. As a right-to-work state, workers in North Carolina are not required to join a union as a condition of employment. As such, union power is severely curtailed when worker choice prevents amassing millions in revenue from forced dues. Compounded by the President's ailing popularity in the face of a severe economic crisis, the traditionally left-leaning labor unions are fleeing en masse over the decision to hold the convention in a state that isn't considered a union stronghold.   Continue Reading...
Utah District Bucks Union
posted by: Alix | July 19, 2011, 07:03 PM
Utah's Ogden School District is a small district just north of Salt Lake City. A charming community with less than 1,000 teachers, Ogden is making news for its school board's decision to bypass local union negotiations in favor of sending individual contracts to teachers for the upcoming school year. While the move has obviously infuriated the local union, the move has been described as not only a trend in teacher negotiations, but the future of how policymakers and school districts will communicate with teachers, especially in areas with hostile and uncompromising unions.   Continue Reading...
NEA Denounces Teach for America
posted by: Alix | July 12, 2011, 03:55 PM
Teach for America, a non-profit organization that recruits recent college graduates and professionals to teach in high-need schools for two years, was lambasted at the NEA's annual conference for what they call efforts by TFA to "union bust" in districts across the country.   Continue Reading...
Union Member Angered by Obama Endorsement
posted by: Alix | July 08, 2011, 08:28 PM
The fallout has begun following the National Education Association's annual conference over Independence Day weekend. While details regarding policies and resolutions continue to emerge, rank and file union members are beginning to realize the implications of the NEA's most high profile declaration, the endorsement of President Obama for the 2012 election.   Continue Reading...
2011 NEA Convention: Higher Dues, Obama Endorsement
posted by: Alix | July 05, 2011, 07:08 PM
While most Americans were enjoying a festive Independence Day weekend, the National Education Association was holding their annual conference in Chicago. Beaten down after a solid year of negative press, declining membership, and legislative and legal battles, the NEA convention took on a surprisingly different tone in 2011.   Continue Reading...
Union Dues on the Rise
posted by: Cindy Omlin | June 24, 2011, 07:08 PM

Teacher unions are in a bit of a financial pinch these days. With declining membership, unilaterally negative press, and countless brewing legislative and legal battles, union leaders are struggling to live within their means. According to tax documents, despite taking in more than $1.5 billion in nationwide revenue in 2008-09, some states are literally upside-down. Faced with difficult decisions about keeping bloated staffs and fueling political agendas, state union chapters across the country are imposing dues hikes and various one-time legislative "assessments" to keep afloat.

Stranger than Fiction: NEA Partners with WWE
posted by: Cindy Omlin | June 24, 2011, 06:32 PM
While non-education related and politically and or financially motivated partnerships are the norm with the National Education Association, last week's bizarre initiative was turning heads in the blogosphere. The NEA's Health Information Network (HIN) and the Create Coalition announced a partnership with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in the newly dubbed "Be a Star," social justice and anti-bulling campaign.   Continue Reading...

What do AT&T and several liberal advocacy groups have in common? Charter School Unionization in Massachusetts
posted by: Cindy Omlin | June 07, 2011, 05:20 PM
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been in the news recently over the attempted unionization of a small charter school on Cape Cod. Lighthouse Charter School was once the pride of the area; unfortunately due to some growing pains and administrator turnover the school was at a crossroads that made it vulnerable to a "card-check" unionizing effort. Some teachers are questioning the legality of unionization without an election. Regardless of the outcome at Lighthouse, any attempt to unionize a successful charter school initiates a necessary conversation about what unionization could mean to the overall charter environment in Massachusetts and elsewhere.   Continue Reading...

The union watchdog group Education Intelligence Agency released an analysis of the National Education Association’s most recent IRS documents this week, shedding light on the astronomical amount the NEA and its state affiliates collect from teachers each year.  According to tax documents, the NEA amassed more than $1.5 billion in revenue in 2008-09, more than 90 percent of it in the form of union dues from teachers.   Continue Reading...

Union Battles in the States

It has been a busy few months for AAE and our state affiliates. More than 12 states are in various stages of advancing laws that deal with curbing union power, advancing education reform, and ending forced unionism. The unions have proved that regardless of whether or not they win battles in the legislature, they will take the fight to the courts and potential ballot initiatives in the next election cycle.
