| NWPE's Becky Baird Opposes Common Core for Xavier Charter |

Along with opposition to the Common Core State Standards, the board's resolution also shuns the Smarter Balanced Assessment, a standardized test aligned with Common Core. The resolution can be read in full on the school's homepage. The conclusion of the resolution states: Xavier Charter Schools Board of Directors hereby express their general opposition to the Common Core State Standards for two reasons: (1) because charter schools should retain greater autonomy than would be provided under Common Core; and, (2) because Xavier is able to pursue a better education for its students that is more rigorous, less costly, less intrusive, and more accountable. Xavier remains, as it always has, committed first and foremost to its students, and fully living up to its mission and philosopy. Ms. Baird describes Xavier's approach as one that offers the community "a classical, academically rigorous, content-rich, liberal arts education which prepares its students to excel in every duty, guiding them toward wisdom and virtue. In the end, a classical education’s greatest challenge and hope is to produce good human beings who are prepared to take their place in a free society." The school does not use test preparation materials but focuses on great curriculum and critical thinking. Noting the success of its approach, Xavier touts that its juniors placed 5th in the state in the Idaho State Department of Education SAT School Day last April outperforming all other school districts in the Magic Valley as well as Blaine County, Cassia County, Minidoka County, Boise, and West Ada.
