bob mcmichael head shotMr. McMichael, a 7th - 12th grade language arts teacher in Cambridge, ID, received the Humanities  Grant to fund the "Salubria Valley Oral History Project," an oral history of "old-timers" in the Cambridge area which his 8th-graders last year began. They conducted and transcribed 21 interviews focused on what life was like in the area when the older folks were kids. They are working on the publication of the interviews in book form, along with photos and other images. "It's a big job and is now being done outside the normal curriculum. We plan to have the book published by early next fall (September 2016)." The funds are being combined with the Idaho Power "Powering Tomorrow" grant received in late 2014 and will pay for recording, transcribing, and scanning equipment as well as the publication and first printing of the book.

Mr. McMichael was an NWPE New Classroom Start Up Grant winner in 2014.  Learn more about his interesting history and views on our blog, Bob McMichael Awarded NWPE New Classroom Start Up Grant.

michelle harmonMs. Harmon is a master journalism educator currently teaching at Borah High School in Boise, ID.  She is the state director of the Idaho Journalism Education Association and  past recipient of the Journalism Educator of the Year and Journalism Advisor of the Year awards.

Ms. Harmon was student editor-in-chief of The Borah Senator in 1979-1980.  When she became the newspaper adviser in 2004, she had files and files worth of publications.  When she also discovered old, brittle issues from the '60s and '70s, she began a multi-year archiving project to develop an online searchable archive of back issues from 1998 up through 2015. This $1,000 grant will help her bring the The Borah Senator archive project up to date.
