Northwest Professional Educators is happy to provide Ms. Sauer with this New Classroom Start-Up Grant to enhance student learning. A longtime special education teacher, Helen had retired at the end of the 2011- 2012 school year and hadn’t planned on returning to teaching. But when she heard of the opportunity at Heritage Academy, a new charter school, she felt she was the right person for the job. Special education has captured her heart and soul. She believes that no matter how significant a child’s disability may be, there is a way to reach that child. She enjoys the challenge of making Heritage Academy a first rate special education program and school. This is Helen’s first year as a member of NWPE. She enjoys the benefits of belonging to a professional organization. Until NWPE came along, she said there was no other organization to join except for the teachers union to which she belonged for a few years. She likes having a professional choice and believes that the professionalism of educators will be advanced if they respect each other, educate the students they are assigned, and are proactive at finding solutions. She believes professionalism starts with the educators who consider the way they dress, what they communicate about their jobs, the extra duties they take on, how they treat their colleagues, etc.
