Member Mention: Lynden Teacher Wins Grant for Math Novels

Northwest Professional Educators is proud to award Mr. Jeff Seely, a math teacher at Lynden High School in Lynden, WA, with a classroom grant for $255 to purchase a classroom set of the novel The Housekeeper and the Professor, an engaging novel that contains a good deal of real mathematics.  Mr. Seely plans to use the books to capture the imaginations of his students, to broaden their perspectives, and to encourage rich conversations about mathematics.

Jeff SeelySeely noted, "Student think more deeply about ideas when they have honest conversations about them.  Too often in mathematics, the conversations only take place within a classroom and only when the teacher forces the conversations to happen.  They are often contrived, one-sided, or shallow.  I would like to see student think and talk about mathematics because they want to, and because it captures their imagination. . . Math text books simply don't capture the imagination of most students like a novel would."

We are happy to provide Mr. Seely this grant to enhance student learning by making instruction and learning more meaningful and interesting.  Thanks for being such an innovative educator, Jeff!  We appreciate your hard work and creativity!
