xavier academic decathlon state champions 2Jolynn Heiner, NWPE member, and fellow academic decathlon coach with Elizabeth Copp, also an NWPE member, reported that this was the first time they had heard about the program and had the chance to go to state.  “To perform like we did our very first year in the program is pretty astounding.”  KMVT News covered the state awards here.  Jolynn is pictured bottom right in the front row of the team picture.

The Xavier team competed in the online national small schools competition in April.  Some of the students won individual awards.

In other Xavier news, Savina Barini, a student of Xavier's Poetry Out Loud teacher Elizabeth Copp (pictured standing far right in team picture), was one of nine national finalists in the Poetry Out Loud competition held April 30 in Washington, D.C.
Prior to the national event, Savina competed against 2,200 Idaho students winning the state competition.   Of her coaching for the competition, Savina stated, ““I just got lucky that the English Department here takes it (the Poetry Out Loud competition) that seriously.”
