The summer seminar is open to teachers from across the United States whose schools and communities are faced with a lack of available resources or with issues related to social injustice. Led by Sondra Perl and her colleagues, Jennifer Lemberg and Alice Braziller, the seminar encourages teachers to think creatively and collaboratively about how they teach the Holocaust and more recent genocides. Participants become adept at dealing with difficult material and discover how writing, dialogue, and inquiry can help motivate students toward social action. Prior experience teaching the Holocaust or focusing on social injustice in the classroom is required.

At the seminar, Brad will introduce a new lesson about Eva Lassman, a Spokane, WA, Holocaust survivor who shared her experiences with many schools and organizations until her passing in 2011.

Brad has an illustrious career in Holocaust education.  In 1997-98, he was chosen as one of 22 national Mandel Teacher Fellows by the U.S. Education Department Holocaust Memorial Museum.  He was selected based on extensive knowledge of Holocaust history, professional and community Holocaust education involvement and successful teaching practices.  That selection led to his participation in a five-day summer program for secondary teachers emphasizing advanced historical and pedagogical issues in order to create educational programs in schools, communities and professional organizations.  Completion of the week-long training at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., resulted in his becoming a Holocaust Museum Teacher Fellow.

At the Second International Conference on Hate Studies sponsored by the Institute for Hate Studies at Gonzaga University, Brad presented on “The Power of Personal Testimony in Teaching about Hate.”  In 2012, Brad was honored at a Yom HaShoah, Holocaust commemoration service at Temple Beth Shalom in Spokane, WA.

NWPE congratulates Brad on his selection as one of the elite Holocaust educators in the United States of America and we thank him and Dr. Proser for their dedication to advancing human dignity and human rights.
