Mansfield Teachers' Independent Action Garners Attention
posted by: Cindy Omlin | January 06, 2015, 09:56 PM

The Quad City Herald covered the teachers' move, although the article headline, Mansfield Teachers Start Union, was misleading.  The new group, Mansfield Professional Educators (MPE), is not a union but it is the recognized bargaining unit.  Collective bargaining does not require that the representative organization be a labor union.  MPE chose not to be a union but was recognized by the school board as the teachers' representative in negotiations.

bozeThe Freedom Foundation in Olympia, WA, also covered the news in Senior Policy Analyst Jami Lund's blog, Mansfield Teachers End WEA Representation.

Mr. Lund shared, "One of the most stunning insights Ric (Bayless, MPE President) offered was, "We get more money for our local effort at $10 a month than we ever had when we paid $70 a month."

Bayless, an NWPE member, was also interviewed by Seattle KIRO radio host David Boze about the action of the Mansfield educators to break free from WEA control and costs.  Listen in starting at minute 30!
