Teacher Choice Gains Steam

It's obvious that teachers are looking for options to the national labor unions for their professional protection and support.  Mike Antonucci, director of the Education Intelligence Agency, reports that in states without compulsory union fees, NEA affiliates lost more than 47,000 active members in 2014 while NEA affiliates in agency fee states gained about 5,300 active members.  Let's look at the numbers in the Northwest.

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that it will take up the Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association case. This landmark case challenges the ability of unions to collect dues from employees who may not wish to be a part of the union or object to the use of their dues on issues which they fundamentally disagree with. This case lays out a First Amendment freedom of speech challenge to the long standing forced unionism policy.

Forced Union Dues at Risk

Thousands of Washington and Oregon educators who don’t want union representation and don’t want to pay union dues are forced to do so because of state laws made possible by the Supreme Court’s 1977 Abood decision. The Supreme Court signaled this week that it may be prepared to strike down this anti-teacher choice practice once and for all.

Earlier this month, AAE joined an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief in support of the petition for certiorari in the Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association as part of a continuing effort to give individual teachers a professional voice outside the union.

NWPE Executive Director Cindy Omlin was interviewed on Freedom Daily, a radio show hosted by Freedom Foundation, a public policy organization focused on limited, accountable government, about a bill in the Washington legislature that would allow educators to vote compulsory union dues out of their union negotiated contracts.

Mike Antonucci from the Education Intelligence Agency couldn’t have put it better when he said that for unions to really make great strides on behalf of Millenials in the teaching profession it “would require sacrificing the interests of those in the room for those still outside of the building.”

Getting your union dues rebate – Act now!

Washington State nonunion agency fee payers should have received their WEA Hudson Packet which the Washington Education Association (WEA) sends to nonunion agency fee payers. The WEA indicates that in order for agency fee payers to receive their $200-$300 union fees rebate for dues not used for representation, the objection/challenge letter must be postmarked no later than January 13.

Michigan Post Right-to-Work

On March 28, 2013, Michigan's Right-to-Work law went into full effect, finally providing Michigan teachers and other workers the freedom to choose whether they want to be a member of a union. Since its inception, AAE has seen a large increase in Michigan teachers searching for professional benefits without the partisan politics of the Michigan Education Association (MEA). However, due to the mass exodus of members, Michigan union leaders are doing everything in their power to keep workers in the fold.   Continue Reading...
Teachers in Kenosha, Wisconsin are now able to choose an association that best meets their needs. Following sweeping changes that ended forced unionism in Wisconsin in 2011, the Kenosha Teachers Union was required to file for annual recertification by August 30th in order to bargain for local teachers. According to reports, the union did not meet this deadline, as the majority of members voted in favor of decertification.   Continue Reading...
NEA Announces Dues Increase

During the Independence Day holiday last week, the National Education Association was holding their annual conference in Atlanta. After another solid year of negative press and declining membership, the convention took on a host of controversial issues in 2013. While news is still emerging from the meeting, it should be noted that the Assembly voted to raise dues by a shocking $3 per member. This fee will be assessed on top of already astronomical dues that can run as high as $1200 per year in some states.   Continue Reading...
