Bridging the Nonfiction Divide

Yet the data suggests that students are far behind by as much as 50%on these goals. In fact, the latest survey found that beyond grade 5, few students were reading books at the appropriate comprehension level.

That’s why Renaissance Learning has stepped in to help bridge the gap and to spark a love of reading for students in any grade level. Renaissance Learning offers quizzes for over 165,000 books that help determine student comprehension and skill level. And in their latest edition, they will be including nonfiction article reading from sources such as NPR and AP to offer a “fuller picture” of student nonfiction reading.

For more information on how you can play a part in bridging the reading divide, check out Learnalytics.com, a free online resource that allows educators to filter books by demographics such as grade, gender, fiction/nonfiction, and keyword to help find a reading list of books tailored to each individual student.

What tactics do you use in your classroom to encourage nonfiction reading?
