| Bill Weaver Wins NWPE Grant for Music Program |

This grant will help Mr. Weaver provide unique ways to help the most severely disabled students to create music. The book “Come on Everybody, Let’s Sing” has several songs, but most importantly, it has teaching ideas and strategies for the special education classroom.
A secondary benefit of Mr. Weaver’s grant is that the whole school will have access to the resources as he serves the whole school. Mr. Weaver is an advocate for teacher professionalism. A trend that he finds counterproductive to professionalism is the practice of requiring teachers to teach the same concept at the same time as the other teachers in the same grade level. He believes that the freedom and autonomy to think for themselves allows the best teachers to shine as professionals which he believes will enhance public support for the school. Teacher choice is another practice that Mr. Weaver believes augments professionalism. “I chose NWPE because I wanted to be a part of an organization which supported me as a teacher without a political agenda. Once teachers have a choice, then the public can see that there are different viewpoints about education. When the ‘marketplace’ opens up, teachers will be seen as professionals.” Congratulations again to Mr. Weaver! We appreciate the extra efforts he makes to provide all students with an interesting classroom experience.

He will also purchase a Suzuki Q-Chord which is an instrument which responds to simple touch. A student who has limited mobility or touch sensitivity could use this instrument to create sounds which could turn into music.
