News Out of Ohio and Wisconsin

With labor protests continuing in state capitals in Wisconsin and Ohio, many are wondering how the situation will resolve itself with either passed legislation or concessions. Today the Republican-controlled Ohio Senate passed a bill that would end forced unionism and make it illegal for public employees to engage in strikes. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin emergency legislation was enacted to fine senators for each day they boycott the budget vote.

In Ohio, senators passed the legislation 17-16 on Wednesday. The bill establishes fines and jail time for those who participate in strikes. Unionized workers could negotiate wages, hours and certain work conditions — but not health care, sick time or pension benefits and no worker would be forced to join a union as a condition of employment.

The measure goes to the state House, where the GOP holds a 59-40 majority. Republican Governor John Kasich has said he supports the effort as a means to balance the budget.

Meanwhile, the Wisconsin Senate voted to impose fines of $100 a day for the 14 Senators who fled Wisconsin to stall the vote on Governor Walker's budget bill.

Governor Walker has maintained that he will not back down. Without a quorum in the Senate, money will run out in just a few short days. Many are warning that nothing will be resolved until government workers are laid off due to budget realities.

Protesters have not let up on antics in either state. In Wisconsin, Republican Senator Glenn Grothman was chased and trapped outside the Wisconsin Capitol before getting help from Democratic state Rep. Brett Hulsey, who urged protestors to back off. Hundreds swarmed the lawmaker with chants of "You suck!" and "Shame!" It seemed like the situation was mere moments from becoming violent.

In Ohio, thousands protested outside of the state capitol. Even with the news of the bill advancing, union leaders and members continued to march. One sign read, "Charlie Sheen makes more sense the Kasich."

Will workers in Wisconsin have to lose their jobs in order to persuade AWOL senators to return to work?
