Gateways to Better Education (GTBE) has provided information and resources to help teachers educate their students about the much beloved Saint Patrick.  Did you know that he was the first person in history to write against slavery? His Christian faith and personal experience led him to condemn the practice according to historian Thomas Cahill, author of the book, How the Irish Saved Civilization..  After being kidnapped from Britain at the age of 16, he served as a Celtic slave for six years until he escaped and returned home.

GTBE Director Eric Buehrer writes that after his escape, "He felt God calling him to return to Ireland with the Gospel.   B
y the end of his life he had baptized over 120,000 Irishmen and established 300 churches. Within his lifetime, or shortly thereafter, the Irish slave trade ended - the result of a transformed people."

In addition to our former blog with many Resources for St. Patrick's Day, you might find the following helpful:

st. patsWhen Irish eyes are smiling, sure 'tis like a morn in spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter you can hear the angels sing,
When Irish hearts are happy all the world seems bright and gay,
And when Irish eyes are smiling, sure, they steal your heart away.
~Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr. (lyrics), Ernest R. Ball (music)

"What do you get when you cross poison ivy with a four-leaf clover?  A rash of good luck."  ~Author Unknown
