As student test scores are becoming a greater part of teachers' evaluations, the idea of having an accurate value-added model is essential for educators. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a generous supporter of education in America, is investing $45 million in research to determine best practices in developing a value-added model.

Congratulations to NWPE member Jeffery Wehr, of Odessa, WA, who was featured in a 2008 Spokesman-Review story about the challenges of teaching math and science. Wehr has been named 2011 Teacher of the Year for Eastern Washington!

Is the "sacred cow" of the union, "last hired, first fired," losing support amongst teachers? AAE's 2010 member survey found that 70% of teachers disagree with the "last hired, first fired" policy and agree that tenure is not necessary to perform well as a teacher.

Parents, educators, and school officials who have been clashing over the content that should be provided in Helena, MT, public school sex education classes saw a revised curriculum approved after school officials made several changes aimed at easing criticism. |

Texas Governor Rick Perry makes his case for opposing national education standards which he believes threaten local control and federalism. Troubled by the process by which the Obama administration used Race to the Top money to entice cash-starved states to get on-board with national standards, Perry wasn’t persuaded. |
