Projects have a great ability to engage and invigorate students.  They offer an authentic learning experience as a means to evaluate student knowledge that is deeper and more nuanced than any multiple choice test.  Teachers dream of projects that inspire, yet so often we design projects that are shallow and require little, if any, critical thinking skills.

By this point, anyone paying attention to trends in education is familiar with the concept of a flipped classroom.  In this model, the teacher assigns the lectures as "homework” in video form and then works with the students by going through what usually would have been assigned for homework in class.  The model has a lot of advantages.  It allows students to work at their own pace, and for the teacher to give extra help where it’s needed.

PD Mindset Book Study

TeachIdaho and NWPE are partnering to offer an eight-week book study on renowned Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck's book Mindset. Teachers will have the opportunity to read and discuss the book in which Dweck discusses how ability and talent are only one small piece of success.  It is our mindset that truly determines success, she believes. For teachers, this provides an easy way to keep on top of their craft through professional development. More and more teachers are looking to online professional development courses as a way to keep abreast of current trends, hone skills, and fit their PD needs into an already cramped teacher schedule. The increase of offerings of online professional development is rapidly replacing older methods of having an expert come to your school, or attending workshops of a various topics. The shift can be seen on AAE's own Professional Development Calendar, where online offerings vastly outnumber in-person workshops or classes. Online professional development is cheaper, easier to fit into a teacher's schedule, and has the ability to be personalized to an individual teacher's need.

Yesterday, Edweek published  an insightful article citing new trends in low-cost professional development courses. As professional development opportunities continue to expand via online platforms, "MOOC's" (massively open online courses) are now being offered to K-12 educators. Silicon Valley company Coursera recently partnered with seven universities to provide 28 free courses, with topics ranging from biology and literacy to lessons on how to structure classes and survive the first year of teaching.
