Research supports what we probably already knew about student collaboration: It’s integral to learning. We know that collaboration helps students build their interpersonal and social and emotional skills. We know that students don’t learn facts in a vacuum; social learning helps them build a more meaningful understanding of the world.

 
What to Do When Technology Fails

It happens to the best of us. We have a great lesson and the center of it is a bit of technology. Maybe your computer won’t boot right when you’re trying to show the one video that would explain your current subject perfectly, or maybe the flashlights you were planning to use for your science lesson are all out of batteries. I once planned a year-long project with my students that relied heavily on a website that went down half-way through the year. If there’s one thing that we can rely on with technology, it’s that we can’t always rely on it. So, what do we do when the technology that we’re using fails us?

 
Patricia Donovan-Hopkins Awarded Scholarship

Congratulations to Patricia Donovan-Hopkins, 4th grade teacher at Columbia Valley Gardens Elementary School in Kalama, WA, Longview School District.  She was awarded a $500 scholarship by Brenda Miller, NWPE Regional Director and Lori Porter, NWPE Board Member, at a staff meeting on January 10, 2018.  She will use the scholarship to attend the "Learning and the Brain" conference in New York City, April 19-21, 2018.  The focus of the conference is "The Science of Stress."

Common Sense Media Releases Its Best EdTech of the Year

Each year, Common Sense Media reviews and rates hundreds of games, movies, toys, and learning tools that are directed at K-12 students. Its mission is to help parents and teachers make better choices about the media that students are exposed to. Over the past few years, it has not only provided in-depth information to teachers, but also identified those products that they view as being top in their field.
