State Policy Update May 10, 2011

As the 2011 legislative session draws closer to its end, tough-talking governors and state legislatures across the country are proceeding with legislation that seeks to implement sweeping education and labor reforms. While each state is experiencing reform on different levels, it is impossible to ignore the ground-breaking changes that will undoubtedly change the face of education in this country in the coming years.
 
2011 Teacher of the Year

National Teacher Appreciation Week also coincides with the announcement of the National Teacher of the Year as well as the State Teachers of the Year and the iconic ceremony in the White House Rose Garden. On Tuesday, President Obama honored Ms. Michelle Shearer of Maryland as the 2011 National Teacher of the Year. Joining Ms. Shearer were fifty other teachers who were each receiving top honors from their respective states.

I was teaching on September 11, 2001 when the Towers fell. In fact, my student's brother worked at the Twin Towers. (Sidenote: the brother escaped safely from the buildings before it collapsed). It was a long day of teaching. As eighteen and nineteen year-olds, the students wanted to talk about what was happening and it just seemed right to put the current lesson on hold and teach another lesson that day. Considering that we didn't have much information and my iPhone had yet to be invented, there were a lot of questions unanswered.

As the 2011 legislative session draws to an end, state legislatures across the country are proceeding with bills that seeks to curb union power and implement sweeping education reform. While Wisconsin and Ohio have received the bulk of the media attention, nearly the entire country will see historic changes in the coming year.
 
AAE Celebrates Teachers & Charters This Week

This week, May 2-8, 2011, is both National Teacher Appreciation Week and National Charter Schools Week. AAE is pleased to recognize both American educators and charter schools this week and every day. Read Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's statement on the occasion here.
