stephanie rice leah guelkerMs. Rice’s award is well-deserved as she seeks ways to increase student achievement and advance the professionalism of educators.  Ms. Rice believes that in order to raise the professionalism of and enhance the respect for teaching and education that “teachers need to first view themselves as professionals beyond the classroom.”  She adds, “ It is important to take an active role speaking about education to the community or by personally striving to improve education by participating in professional development activities.  Students and education constantly change, which means that we must continue developing our professional knowledge.”

Ms. Rice has been able to leverage her personal experience and professional knowledge inside and outside the classroom on behalf of education.  She’s led professional development activities for other teachers within her school and spoken at local community meetings.  She also recently spoke on a panel for the Idaho Joint House-Senate Education Committee about her teaching experiences in relation to the Idaho Core Standards.   “Because I chose to further my knowledge and enhance my teaching, I have been able to share my passion for teaching and knowledge about what is happening in education with not only my students but also my community and state.  From my personal experience, I have learned that people would rather hear about educational issues from those who are directly affected (teachers, students, etc.).  Teachers should make their voice heard outside their classroom in whatever way possible to help raise awareness and respect for the profession.”

Ms. Rice has been a member of NWPE for two years.  Although she joined NWPE because it offers great liability services and general support for educators at an affordable price, she really appreciates that “NWPE focuses on students, teachers, and important issues within education rather than other political issues.”  She notes, “It’s important that I can be a part of a professional organization that clearly supports students and my personal philosophies about education.”
