Crystal will use the funds to purchase materials to help create an engaging classroom where students are immersed in science, provide hands-on experiences where students are involved in doing science, and create student interest in science related careers by making science fun and exciting.

Northwest Professional Educators is happy to provide Crystal with this New Classroom Start-Up Grant to enhance student learning.  We’re also privileged to serve an educator of her caliber as a member of NWPE, a membership which she highly values.  According to Crystal, there are many reasons to join NWPE.  “First, the cost of membership is VERY affordable and the website resources and grant and scholarship opportunities are great.”  She also understood that teaching science in a middle school setting could open her to liability and she wanted NWPE’s superior liability policy.  The encouragement and testimonials of her colleagues solidified her decision to join NPWE.

A former microbiologist, Crystal decided to become an educator at the age of 38.  She thought it would help her to grow as a person and allow her to contribute her math and science knowledge more effectively.  Inspired by a number of fantastic teachers, she decided to take the leap into teaching after volunteering extensively at her children's school.

Crystal strongly believes in the value of professional educator organizations like NWPE.  “As a new teacher I have found membership in professional organizations incredibly helpful and inspiring. Teachers in these organizations are so willing to share what they have learned, lesson plans they have created, and management strategies to try. Much of what I have implemented in my own classroom has been received from more experienced teachers. Teachers can only become better educators if they continue to learn. Professional organizations like NWPE provide teachers with the network and tools to help one another progress.”

NWPE is proud to reward educators for their hard work and creativity in the classroom. Crystal’s award is well-deserved as she seeks ways to increase student achievement.

NWPE awards teacher scholarships and classroom grants up to $500 and $250 new classroom start-up grants. All educators are eligible for the awards although NWPE members receive first preference.  The next application deadline is March 1, 2014. See more at
