February is Black History Month, or National African American History Month, an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially recognized the occasion, and interestingly both Canada and the United Kingdom share in devoting the month to celebrating Black history. To assist students and educators in discussing the topic, free federal resources from various government agencies are available online and are being update all month long. Browse ready-to-use lesson plans, student activities, collection guides and research aids on a special webpage just for teachers. Take a moment to peruse the following: The Library of Congress
National Archives (“Teaching With Documents”)
National Endowment for the Humanities
National Gallery of Art National Park Service
