News Out of Ohio and Wisconsin

With labor protests continuing in state capitals in Wisconsin and Ohio, many are wondering how the situation will resolve itself with either passed legislation or concessions. Today the Republican-controlled Ohio Senate passed a bill that would end forced unionism and make it illegal for public employees to engage in strikes. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin emergency legislation was enacted to fine senators for each day they boycott the budget vote.
 
Loads of Free Online Resources for Teachers

To be frank, I need the good stuff and I need it to be free, please. According to a recent survey by PBS, teachers’ reliance on technology and media to teach is increasing—rapidly. The increase is for good reasons: (1) there is quality content on the internet, (2) our students’ attention spans silently demand it, (3) it helps teachers differentiate instruction and (4) with school budgets shrinking, much of the online educational content is free.
 
Education Reform Legislation Moves a Step Closer in Idaho

Yesterday, lawmakers in the Idaho Senate passed landmark legislation that would phase out tenure, restrict union power, and limit contracts to one year among other components. The legislation passed on a 20-15 vote and is among three bills in the legislature that are set to carry out Superintendent Tom Luna's "Students Come First" education plan.
 
Utah Bill Hammering Unions Advances

This week, Utah House Bill 183 cleared several legislative hurdles after years of union push back. The House advanced a bill Wednesday that would prohibit school districts from paying teachers on leave from the classroom for union duties as well as prohibit school district money contributing to union leader salaries.

 
Labor Saga Continues

The saga continues all over the country as Wisconsin, Indiana, Tennessee, and Ohio lawmakers are all fighting to end compulsory unionism and close budget shortfalls. Despite protests, national headlines and Democratic lawmakers leaving the states in droves, experts are calling this landmark legislation that will change the face of public sector unions for years to come.
