The project was in response to the Mt. Everest Challenge which was launched by the High Five Children's Health Collaborative, a project of Blue Cross of Idaho. It challenges legislators to get healthier while helping a local school. The top three legislators will be awarded $5,000 to give to an elementary school to purchase activity equipment.
Beth shares that there have been several teachers who have helped the students develop the website. The project began with the school's internship program. All of the school's seniors are required to complete a 280 hour internship applying the skills learned in their technical pathways. Students had assisted the Blue Cross Foundation with projects in the past and staff approached the school's Work-Based Learning Coordinator, Cheryl Deitchler, about whether or not students could help out with this project. After consideration, the school determined the project would be a good fit for a group of advanced students that needed a challenge. Consequently, teachers and students began working with the Foundation and the High Five Mt. Everest Challenge website was launched.
Beth notes that the project has given students invaluable real life experience. "There is nothing like a real project with real deliverables. The work they did is impressive and required dedication. It was a learning process from project management to interfacing with your customers."
